Nick Knight Used AI to Turn H&M's Fashion Show Into Something Interactive

What if a fashion show did not just show you images, but reacted to you?

That is what H&M explored with photographer Nick Knight and SHOWstudio at London Fashion Week. Their new H&M&YOU&I show used AI to turn photographs and illustrations into moving, interactive fashion visuals in real time.

The interesting part is not simply that H&M used AI. It is how they used it.

Real photographs first, then AI

The project started with real photographs of models Alex Consani and Archie Renaux, shot in the studio by Knight, along with illustrations created by Cliff Warner. AI was then used to process these images frame by frame, creating new moving visuals that could respond to movement during the show.

So AI did not replace the creative process. It became another layer of it.

That detail matters for brands watching AI fashion experiments. The starting point was still a photographer, a studio, and images made by people. The model work and illustration came before the software layer.

A new visual language, not a copy of photography

Nick Knight's idea goes further. AI should not just copy photography or filmmaking. It should help create a new visual language of its own.

That is a different ambition from generating lookalike campaign stills or filling a feed with synthetic product shots. Knight is pointing toward forms of motion and interaction that photography and traditional film alone do not deliver on a runway or in a digital show.

From watching fashion to entering the experience

H&M's show treated the audience as part of the picture. When AI-processed images can respond to movement in the room, the event stops being a one-way presentation and starts behaving like an interactive system.

That shift is useful for marketers and creative directors thinking beyond asset generation. The next wave of AI fashion may be less about choosing between human creativity and AI, and more about using AI to make creative ideas more interactive, unpredictable, and alive.

H&M's experiment with Knight and SHOWstudio is a clear example of that direction: from simply watching fashion to becoming part of the experience.

What brands can take from this

  • Start with strong human-made source assets before adding AI processing.
  • Use AI to extend the work into motion and interaction, not only to regenerate stills.
  • Design for audience response when the format allows it, rather than treating every show as a static broadcast.
  • Ask whether the technology creates a new visual language, or only imitates an old one faster.

If your team is building AI into creative production, the H&M&YOU&I approach is a useful reference: keep authorship at the start of the pipeline, then use AI where interaction and motion add something the original photograph could not do alone.
